Therapy & coaching for straight spouses

after discovering your partner might be gay, lesbian, or transgender

Heal from deception and betrayal.

Rebuild a life that feels like yours again.

Have you discovered that your partner is secretly gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, or same-sex attracted? When this happens, it can feel like your whole world has been turned upside down and inside out. Your sense of reality shatters. Your relationship is confusing, and your partner suddenly feels like a stranger. How could the person you thought loved you the most hurt you the most?

If this is you, you’re not alone:

  • You’re questioning if the relationship was ever real
  • You feel betrayed, confused, or in shock
  • It seems that no one sees your pain
  • Sometimes it’s even hard to remember how to breathe

I get it, because I’ve lived it, and I’m so glad you’ve found your way here! I’m Karen, the founder of Not My Closet®. I’m Australia’s only specialist counsellor and coach helping straight spouses and partners of trans people navigate the shock, grief, and rebuilding that comes after the life-altering discovery that your partner is same-sex attracted, gay, or transgender. Working in Australia and internationally, I help straight spouses heal, recover, and thrive.

The betrayal you’ve experienced doesn’t define your future, even if it’s taking up all the space in your present life. You can find YOU under the rubble and emerge with renewed hope for a better future.

Where you might be right now

You just found out…

In the early days after discovering your partner’s secret sexuality or gender identity, you might be drowning in despair and confusion.

  • The shock is fresh and overwhelming
  • You’re trying to make sense of what’s happened
  • You don’t know what this means for your future

Some time has passed…

It’s been a while since D-Day, but you feel stuck in the pain. It’s hard to know how to get free and feel like you again.

  • The initial shock has eased, but the impact is still felt
  • You’re trying to rebuild your life in some way
  • You’re trying to create a new future that works for you

You don’t have to figure everything out right now

One of the most overwhelming parts of this experience is the pressure to decide what to do – whether to stay, leave, or somehow make it work. But it can be difficult to find clarity amid shock and betrayal.

You may be conflicted or ambivalent

  • You feel pulled in different directions
  • Leaving feels impossible, but staying does, too
  • You’re trying to understand what’s possible

Could a mixed-orientation relationship work?

  • Perhaps you’re not ready to give up on the relationship
  • Finances or age make leaving seem impossible
  • You wonder if there’s a way of making it work

Should I leave after discovering my partner is LGBT?

  • This isn’t the relationship you signed up for
  • You’re facing grief and uncertainty about letting go
  • You don’t want a divorce, but it feels inevitable

You don’t need to decide yet. The first step is to find solid ground and feel safe and regulated enough to think clearly. It can be helpful to get support with this, such as therapy or coaching.

How I Support Straight Spouses

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, confused, or unsure what to do next, you don’t have to navigate this alone. I offer counselling and coaching to help you make sense of what’s happened and begin to rebuild a life that feels like yours again. Groups coming soon. As a lived-experience therapist and coach working solely with the fallout of closeted mixed-orientation, my focus is fully on meeting you in this space with deep compassion and empathy. You don’t have to go through this alone.

How ‘Not My Closet’ came to be

Hi, I’m Karen – therapist, coach, & founder of Not My Closet®.

After my own ‘straight spouse experience’, I started Not My Closet to provide support for straight spouses navigating the shock, grief, and rebuilding that comes after discovering their partner isn’t straight. No one should have to go through this alone without having someone on their team who deeply understands what they’re going through.

Note: This site is queer-affirming but focused on heterosexual partners. The rights of LGBTQIA+ people to live authentically are acknowledged and respected. The rights of straight partners to make an informed choice about who they marry are also acknowledged and respected. Both stories matter.
